Impetigo (ages 1 & over)
Impetigo is a contagious skin infection that commonly affects young children, though people of all ages can develop it. While it may be uncomfortable and spreads easily, it is not a serious condition and often clears up on its own. However, treatment can help speed up recovery.
The infection occurs when bacteria enter the skin, often through cuts, insect bites, or other minor skin injuries. In some cases, impetigo can develop due to underlying skin conditions such as head lice, scabies, or eczema.
Impetigo usually starts with red sores or blisters that typically appear on exposed areas such as the face (around the mouth and nose) and hands. Over time, these sores burst and form crusty, yellow or golden-brown patches.
You may notice that these patches:
- Increase in size
- Spread to other areas like the arms, waist, or legs
- Cause itching
- Become slightly painful
