About Rabies
When to get vaccinated: - Start the vaccination course at least five weeks before travel to ensure you can complete all doses on time.
Course:
- The standard course consists of three doses:
- The second dose is given seven days after the first.
- The third dose is administered three weeks after the second.
Accelerated course: - If traveling on short notice, an expedited schedule may be available, where the third dose is given two weeks after the second.
Boosters: - Booster doses may be required depending on your risk of continued exposure to rabies.
How it's given: - Administered as an injection in the upper arm.
Side effects: - Possible mild side effects include fever, rash, nausea, and muscle aches.
Children: - The rabies vaccine is safe for administration from birth.
Additional precautions: - Avoid contact with animals while traveling. If bitten or scratched, immediately wash the wound with soap and water and seek medical help.
Risk if infected: - Rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms develop. There is no cure.
