Meningitis ACWY

Meningitis spreads through close contact via respiratory droplets from the nose and throat, such as through coughing, sneezing, or kissing. The meningitis ACWY vaccine provides protection against four types of meningococcal bacteria: A, C, W, and Y.

About Meningitis ACWY

When to get vaccinated: - If you are traveling to a high-risk area, aim to get vaccinated at least two weeks before departure.

Course: - The vaccine requires only a single dose.

Boosters: - Routine boosters are not generally needed. However, if a meningitis ACWY certificate is required, a booster can be given after five years.

How it's given: - Administered as an injection in the upper arm.

Side effects: - Common side effects include redness, swelling, or soreness at the injection site, as well as tiredness. Some people may experience a mild fever.

Children: - The vaccine is suitable for infants from birth.

Additional precautions: - Seek immediate medical help if you or anyone around you shows symptoms of meningitis, as early treatment is crucial. Note that this vaccine does not protect against meningitis B.

Risk if infected: - Meningitis causes inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can lead to severe complications such as brain damage or, in some cases, can be fatal.
