What is Chikungunya?

Chikungunya is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes, primarily Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. It is most common in tropical and subtropical regions, although outbreaks have occurred in other parts of the world.

Two vaccines are available to help prevent chikungunya infection: Ixchiq and Vimkunya.

Ixchiq Vaccine

Who should get vaccinated?


Ixchiq is approved for:

  • Adults aged 18 years and older
  • Travellers to areas where chikungunya is common or experiencing outbreaks
  • Individuals at increased risk of severe disease

Dosage schedule


  • Single-dose vaccine
  • Provides protection after one injection

Booster requirement


  • Booster doses are not currently recommended

Administration method


  • Given as an injection in the upper arm

Possible side effects


  • Common side effects include:
  • Pain or tenderness at the injection site
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle pain
  • Fever
  • Joint pain

These side effects are usually mild to moderate and resolve within a few days.

Vimkunya Vaccine

Who should get vaccinated?


Vimkunya is approved for:

  • Adults aged 18 years and older
  • Travellers to high-risk chikungunya areas
  • Individuals at increased exposure risk

Dosage schedule


  • Single-dose vaccine

Booster requirement


  • Booster doses are not currently recommended at this time

Administration method


  • Given as an injection in the upper arm

Possible side effects


  • Common side effects may include:
  • Injection site pain or redness
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle pain
  • Mild fever

Side effects are generally mild and temporary.

Eligibility


  • Both vaccines are currently approved for adults aged 18 years and older
  • They are particularly recommended for travellers to areas with ongoing or high risk of chikungunya transmission
